"When are you interviewing the band?" a message reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: I also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're far from alone. Multiple famous supporters have also begged for the honor.

It's clear a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy contenders.

Similar to the most iconic ensembles, they're a close gang. Their music videos repeatedly feature them walking in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the ultimate honor. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

"And thus all are welcome to be the next part of the family."

Historic Milestone

The band have called into home, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination isn't lost on the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The lyrics track departures and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to make an effort in shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed toughness demanded a fresh approach – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The trio's openness inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner left Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an global fan base.

However Haim will always be their primary priority.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was a young child," says Alana. "There is nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
